If someone were to tell you that the greatest story ever told was divined over 8000 years ago, would you believe me? As we approach Christmas, I wanted to write about Christ’s birth. But first, let’s look back at the beginning of us. “In the beginning, God created…” These five simple words were just the start of everything we know today.
God created us to be with Him for all eternity. And even though God knew we would disobey, He created us anyway. Even though He knew we would need a redeemer, he created us anyway. A redeemer that only He could give. Knowing all of this and more, He still created us.
After our disobedience in the garden, God promised us a redeemer; a savior that would become one of us yet remain fully God. 100% human and 100% God.
Then the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel. - Genesis 3:14-15
God is holy and by His very nature cannot be in the presence of sin. Seemingly doomed for eternity, mankind became separated from our Creator. But God promised a Redeemer who would come and defeat death and be our Savior. So what started in the Garden with our creation and disobedience take a great turn with the birth of a Savior.
Love Came Down
A little over 2000 years ago, God started the fulfillment of His garden promise with the birth of Jesus, His only begotten Son. One hundred percent man and one hundred percent God, Jesus was that promised redeemer from the garden even before we were created. Jesus, the perfect Savior, left Heaven and came to be the sacrifice for the propitiation of our disobedience.
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole empire should be registered. This first registration took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. Then she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and she wrapped Him snugly in cloth and laid Him in a feeding trough—because there was no room for them at the lodging place. -Luke 2:1-7
The birth of our Redeemer, the promised Messiah, God’s plan for restoring His people had come in the form of a small baby. Giving birth to Jesus, Mary, the virgin maiden, and her fiance Joseph knew who Jesus was to be. However, there is more to the story than a Baby in a manager. Stay tuned…
